============================================================= Stratify ReadMe File for Windows 7 Stratify Version 1.5 Copyright (c) 2010. Irmela Herzog All rights reserved. ============================================================= Please read this file before installing or launching the software. The aim of the freeware program Stratify is to lay out the Harris diagram automatically, taking all the available information on chronology and groupings into account. =================== System Requirements =================== * 800 x 600 or higher monitor resolution * 5 MB of free disk space in the Windows drive * 4 MB of free disk space in the target installation drive Stratify was first developed on a Windows 2000 PC, later versions were developed on an XP PC. Some tests were carried out with Windows 7. Nevertheless, I do not claim that Stratify runs on any other PC than on my PCs, but I hope that it does. ===================================== Installing Stratify on a Windows 7 PC ===================================== The standard automatic installation procedures do not work on a Windows 7 PC. The Stratify_Win7.zip file contains all data to install Stratify on a Windows 7 PC manually. You need to be logged in as an administrator on the computer. Please proceed as follows: 1. Use PowerArchiver, Winrar, Winzip, or a compatible program to unpack the zipped installation files to a directory on your hard disk. 2. Run BDEInfoSetup.EXE to install the Borland database engine 3. Copy Stratify.exe and STRATIFY.HLP to a subdirectory of the program directory 4. Double-click Stratify.exe - the program should run now, except for calling help. 5. The help file is in an old format, you have to download an additional tool that supports the old help file format. The tool is available at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=258aa5ec-e3d9-4228-8844-008e02b32a2c&displaylang=en Stratify should run now. Some additional actions increase the ease of use: 6. Link the program to the desktop so that you can start it easily 7. Change the properties of the desktop symbol so that the stratify.ico is used 8. Move the test files included in the sample directory of the installation zip file to a separate working directory. The sample directory includes two Stratify projects and an example term file: 1. sgatec.syp Stratigraphic sequence of the South Gate site, Winchester, as published by E. Harris, 1975, The stratigraphic sequence: a question of time. World Archaeology 7.1 (Fig. 29, p. 120). 2. GroupTest.syp Fictitious stratigraphic data set with groups and phases. 3. SampleTerms.db The example term file SampleTerms.db mainly reproduces terms and their explanations given by Adams (Adams, M. 2000, The Optician's Trick: an approach to recording excavation using an Iconic Formation Process Recognition System. In: S. Roskams (ed.), Interpreting Stratigraphy. Site evaluation, recording procedures and stratigraphic analysis. BAR Int. Ser. 910 (Oxford 2000), 91-101) and Roskams (Roskams, S., 2001, Excavation. Cambridge Manuals in Archaeology, p. 193). ===================== Uninstalling Stratify ===================== To uninstall Stratify, uninstall the BDEInfo application and delete Stratify.exe, Stratify.hlp and the sample files. ============================ Known Issues and Limitations ============================ Stratify is a single user program i.e. only one user should work with one copy of Stratify at a time. Some checking and layout procedures are still fairly slow. The main reason is that the Borland data base engine was used. I will try to speed up these procedures in near future by using different data structures within these procedures. Please keeo in mind that the Stratify software is developed as a hobby project on evenings and weekends, therefore progress is fairly slow. ============= Release Notes ============= For a list of bug fixes and enhancements that were made for this release of Stratify, please refer to the web site www.stratify.org/History.htm ===================== Contacting the author ===================== Please report Stratify problems to the author: Irmela Herzog Kuckucksweg 15 53123 Bonn Germany e-Mail: DSchmidt.IHerzog@t-online.de
